A diamond's weight is measured by what is known as a 'carat', which is a small unit of measurement equal to 200 milligrams, 1/5 of a gram or 0.200 gram.
Carat is not a measure of a diamond's size, since cutting a diamond to different proportions will affect its weight. When written, carat is usually abbreviated "Ct." or "TCWT" for total carat weight if several stones make up the weight being listed.

In other words, bigger does not necessarily mean better. All 5 C's - Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat Weight and Created must be balanced in order to arrive at a diamond that is beautiful and fits your budget. None of the 5C's is mutually exclusive, however when you purchase a fancy colored diamond, the color is "King" and that is what you will undoubtedly pay a premium for. A better clarity is generally more costly but color, the intensity, hue and saturation are all very important. For example, you can have a well-cut diamond whose weight is distributed properly or a diamond that is cut too shallow to make it wider and heavier and will not display the most brilliance or one that is cut too deeply, to add weight to the bottom of the stone - again compromising its ability to radiate maximum brilliance.
