Carat Weight

The fancy colored diamonds that JewelNet.com offer are  "Created Diamonds" that are identical to mined diamonds in every way except for their point of origin. Having said that, the 4 C's that apply to mined diamonds also apply to our created diamonds, plus the benefit of the fifth "C", created.

A diamond's weight is measured by what is known as a 'carat', which is a small unit of measurement equal to 200 milligrams, 1/5 of a gram or 0.200 gram.

Carat is not a measure of a diamond's size, since cutting a diamond to different proportions will affect its weight. When written, carat is usually abbreviated "Ct." or "TCWT" for total carat weight if several stones make up the weight being listed.

Here is a diagram that shows the relative size of various carat weights in a diamond that is cut to the same proportions:

The most important thing to remember when it comes to a diamond's carat weight is that it is not the only factor that determines a diamond's value or beauty. In other words, bigger does not necessarily mean better. All 5 C's - Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat Weight and Created must be balanced in order to arrive at a diamond that is beautiful and fits your budget. None of the 5C's is mutually exclusive, however when you purchase a fancy colored diamond, the color is "King" and that is what you will undoubtedly pay a premium for. A better clarity is generally more costly but color, the intensity, hue and saturation are all very important. JewelNet.com's vivid colored Created Diamonds offer diamonds that are identical to a mined diamonds for a fraction of the cost with no compromise. In fact, vivid colored diamonds are among the rarest and most expensive mined diamonds and sometimes finding one for sale regardless of the price may be the biggest challenge.

When comparing two mined diamonds it is important to note that they are not created equal. Two diamonds of equal Carat Weight may vary substantially in price due to their Cut, Color and Clarity. Also, a diamond's weight can be 'hidden' in different parts of the stone. For example, you can have a well-cut diamond whose weight is distributed properly or a diamond that is cut too shallow to make it wider and heavier and will not display the most brilliance or one that is cut too deeply, to add weight to the bottom of the stone - again compromising its ability to radiate maximum brilliance. This is not the case with our Created Diamonds because each is cut to exacting proportions to maximize the Color and beauty of the diamond.
